Principles to practice approach for EL success

SIOP Training of Trainers (TOT) I: Foundations

Enhance your SIOP Model knowledge to support delivery of effective professional development workshops at your school.

This comprehensive and interactive institute is designed to help participants develop and deliver SIOP Model professional development.

The Foundations institute is designed for those with a basic working knowledge of the SIOP Model through some past SIOP Model workshop attendance or self-study. Participants will review the SIOP Model and acquire knowledge and skills to help PreK-12 teachers better integrate content and language instruction for English learners.

This is the right strand for those who:

  • Have some experience with the SIOP Model, but have not fully implemented the Model in their classroom

  • Have not yet attended at least a four day SIOP introductory workshop and need a robust review of the SIOP Model

  • Are interested in beginning to develop the skills of a SIOP facilitator

  • Please note: this institute is not intended for those who are learning SIOP for the first time. Contact CAL about SIOP introductory workshops.

Early bird registration by October 1, 2017: $1,325/person.
After October 1, 2017: $1,400/person. Send 2 people or more and pay $1,350 each.

Cost includes all training materials (SIOP training manual, Learning the SIOP Model DVD, a printout of the trainer's PowerPoint, and hand-outs) and breakfast and lunch each day.

Travel and hotel expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

SIOP TOT I: Foundations Agenda

Day One:

  • Key characteristics and elements of effective SIOP Model professional development workshops

  • SIOP Model review with modeling of workshop activities for second language acquisition, SIOP Model overview and research, and the Lesson Preparation component

Day Two:

  • SIOP Model review with modeling of workshop activities for the components of Building Background, Comprehensible Input

  • SIOP workshop planning

Day Three:

  • SIOP Model review with modeling of workshop activities for the components of Strategies and Interaction

  • SIOP workshop planning

Day Four:

  • SIOP Model review with modeling of workshop activities for the components of Practice/Application, Lesson Delivery, and Review & Assessment

  • Presentations and peer review

Daily Training Schedule

8:00 – 8:30 am Breakfast and conversation
8:30 am – 12:00 pm Morning training session
12:00 – 12:45 pm Lunch and networking
12:45 – 3:30 pm Afternoon training session (including mid-afternoon dessert break)


In order to reserve a seat at CAL's Institute, please register by completing steps 1-4 of the online registration form to tentatively reserve your seat for this Institute. A confirmation email will follow with information about payment to guarantee your seat. We encourage you to register as soon as possible. Payment may follow separately.

Your seat at the workshop will be confirmed once payment is received. Please decide about your method of payment (credit card or purchase order).

If paying by credit card, register to reserve your seat. The final step will connect you to the CAL Store and allow you to submit credit card information for payment. Call 888-543-9461 to speak to a representative.

If paying by purchase order (PO), register to reserve your seat and then send a signed copy of your PO by fax to 888-700-3629 or email a PDF to calstore@brightkey.net as soon as possible. Cancellation Policy
We encourage participants to register as soon as possible and to let CAL know if you do not plan to attend the session as soon as possible. Participants may cancel their registration and receive a full refund up to three (3) weeks prior to the course start date by sending an email to store@cal.org. After that date, no refunds will be available. However, registrants may choose to receive the workshop materials by mail, postpone their attendance to a future CAL Institute, or transfer the registration to another individual up to three (3) days prior to the course start date. Contact us to discuss your options.

Certificate of Completion
Participants will receive a CAL Certificate of Completion which may be used for continuing education credit.

Graduate Credit Option
An option for two graduate credits from Trinity Washington University is available for this CAL Institute. The cost is $495. Participants must attend all workshop days and complete an assignment to be distributed during the institute. If you have questions about requirements and registration for the CAL Institute graduate credits, please contact CAL Solutions.

Fair Use of CAL SIOP Materials
Individuals who have completed the CAL SIOP TOT Institute have permission from CAL to use CAL SIOP materials in the course of providing SIOP professional development to educators in their school or school districts. At this time, CAL does not offer endorsement or certification as a CAL SIOP facilitator for fee-based services. If you have questions about the use of CAL SIOP materials, please contact Jen Himmel.

Venue and Travel Information

This institute will be held at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel, Chevy Chase, MD.

A limited number of discounted hotel rooms are available. Please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. Discounted hotel reservations can be made by following the appropriate link below or by calling the hotel directly at 301-828-3364 ext. 7000, or Marriott Central Reservations at 1-800-321-2211 and mention CAL, the institute name and dates.

Hotel reservations must be made by October 23, 2017 for this Institute in order to secure the discounted rate. While the Institute includes breakfast and lunch, hotel rates do not include travel incidentals, such as additional meals or nightly parking fees. Upon check-in, a credit card is required for any potential hotel incidentals.

About SIOP Institutes

SIOP Training of Trainers (TOT) institutes are designed for district professional developers, district and school-based coaches, administrators, and teacher leaders who have some experience with the SIOP Model and who support teacher instruction. Participants need to be familiar with the SIOP Model.

Modeled after SIOP workshops, SIOP TOT institutes include a variety of activities, such as demonstration and explanation, analysis of video teaching sequences, and small group tasks.
