Foreign Language
PreK–12
CAL has a long tradition of promoting early language education
programs in elementary schools across the country. CAL is known
for its innovative Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) interview for children, which includes hands-on activities and
role plays to help children demonstrate their language skills
and knowledge. CAL also hosts the Ñandutí Web site,
which offers resources and information about early language learning.
SOPA: Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (for Grades 2–8);
ELLOPA: Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (for Grades PreK–2); and
COPE: CAL Oral Proficiency Exam (for Grades 5–8)
The SOPA and ELLOPA interviews are innovative language proficiency
assessment instruments designed to allow young students to demonstrate
their highest level of performance in oral fluency, grammar,
vocabulary, and listening comprehension. The COPE measures a student's ability to understand, speak, and be understood by others in a second langauge. Learn more.
