Learn to rate oral proficiency with the computer-assisted Multimedia Rater Training Program

MRTP logoThe Multimedia Rater Training Program (MRTP) is an interactive software program designed to teach professionals to rate oral language proficiency. This computer-assisted professional development program was modeled after live rater training workshops and CAL’s self-instructional Rater Training Kits. The MRTP provides a hands-on introduction to oral proficiency assessment and teaches rating skills conveniently and effectively via CD-ROM.

The program begins with training in the use of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines—Speaking (Revised 1999). These well-known guidelines are explained in learnable units that enable users to master their complexity. Furthermore, the guidelines are made concrete through authentic speech samples at each level of proficiency.

MRTP book coverThe MRTP then teaches users how to rate examinee performances on the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI), a tape-mediated test of oral proficiency. Program users listen to and rate more than 200 authentic examinee responses that have been pre-rated by certified SOPI and ACTFL raters. This extensive practice helps users develop the professional-level skills needed to rate consistently and reliably.

An adaptive component in the software allows more experienced raters to skip over information they already know, while providing extra practice for beginners. This feature makes the program invaluable for use in refreshing rating skills.

The MRTP also provides a resource after training has been completed, allowing access for program users to all the pre-rated examinee responses used in the program. Raters can use these as models to apply their skills when evaluating new examinees.

NOTE: The MRTP is not designed for Macintosh computers; therefore, a PC must be used.
