Working with Young English Language Learners: Some Considerations

Testing / Assessment

PreK–12 ESL Assessment

The spotlight in pre-kindergarten to twelfth grades is currently on understanding the academic achievement of English language learners. CAL is doing its part to encourage and foster higher levels of academic achievement among English language learners through its assessment projects.

Projects

World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA)
CAL is working with a consortium of 19 states to create and enhance large scale language and academic assessments for English language learners (ELLs) in grades K–12 in order to meet the legislated demands of No Child Left Behind. Learn more.

Computer-Based Test of Science and Math for Beginning English Language Learners
CAL is working with the WIDA Consortium to develop ONPAR, an alternative test that allows students to demonstrate their content knowledge with a test instrument sensitive to their lower proficiency in English. CAL and WIDA recently launched the ONPAR Web site. Learn more.

Diagnostic Assessment of Reading Comprehension
CAL is developing a reading comprehension test battery for English language learners and native English speaker children from Grades 3 through 5. The test battery will include measurement of decoding and word fluency, central comprehension processes and children's sensitivity to linguistic variation in the text. Learn more.
