Assessments from CAL
CAL's experienced staff of language testing experts work closely with schools and school districts, administrators, teachers, and language experts to develop English and foreign language proficiency tests. In particular, CAL is known for its innovative technology-mediated oral proficiency tests, including the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI), BEST Plus, and oral proficiency assessments for young students: the SOPA and ELLOPA. An overview of our testing products is provided below. For more details or to order, visit the CAL Store.
Oral English Proficiency Assessment for Adults

semi-adaptive, print-based version with three parallel forms. Learn

Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI)
The Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI) is a tape-mediated test of speaking proficiency for high school students and older. All SOPI items are based on the speaking proficiency guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The test is presented to examinees via a test booklet and a master tape and can be administered individually by anyone using two tape recorders. It can also be used in a language laboratory setting to test groups. Learn more about the SOPI.
SOPI Rater Training Kits & Live Rater Training
The Self-Instructional Rater Training Kits teach professionals to use the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines-Speaking to rate oral proficiency using the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview. The kits consist of four parts in addition to the SOPI itself: Rater Training Kit Manual; Rater Training Kit Tapes; Rater Training Kit Workbook; and Rater Training Kit Reference Guide. For more information about ordering the SOPI Rater Training Kits, visit the CAL Store. For more information about live rater training workshops, contact CAL at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA)
The SOPA (for Grades 2-8) and ELLOPA (for Grades preK-2) interviews are innovative language proficiency assessment instruments designed to allow young students to demonstrate their highest level of performance in oral fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. These interactive listening and speaking assessments are designed for children who are learning a foreign language in a school setting. Learn more about the SOPA and ELLOPA.
SOPA Online Training now available
CAL offers a variety of online training courses that teach participants how to administer and rate students’ oral language using the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA). CAL now offers Introduction to SOPA, the Moderated Introduction to SOPA, and Rating the SOPA. Learn more about SOPA Online Training.
Language Proficiency Tests
CAL's language proficiency tests are designed to measure the general proficiency levels in listening and reading attained by English-speaking learners of a foreign language. All test materials are mailed to the institution; responses are marked on machine-scoreable answer sheets and returned to CAL for scoring. The tests consist of approximately 100-150 four-option multiple-choice questions (exact number varies by test). For more information about ordering CAL's language proficiency tests, visit the CAL Store.
