Frequently Asked Questions about TWI
Are there any published materials available for use in TWI classrooms?
Many major publishing houses have textbooks and trade books for teaching language arts and content in non-English languages, including some specializing in bilingual education materials, such as Santillana and Attanasio and Associates.
Resources for finding bilingual materials include:
- NCELA's publishers and distributors list (click on a category, such as Spanish/bilingual)
- The Illinois Resource Center's E-Kit (Electronic Resource for Educating English Language Learners)
Materials for two-way classrooms should include a multicultural component. Resources for multiculturalism in the classroom include:
- NCELA's multicultural/multilingual distributors list
- Multicultural Pavilion
- Rethinking Schools
- National Association for Multicultural Education
- Huellas (materials in Spanish for teaching the history, literature, and art of Latin America)
Be sure to attend conferences focusing on bilingual/multicultural/ESL education where there are often large vendor fairs showing the newest materials
For locally developed materials, check for curriculum materials listed in The Educator's Reference Desk, or browse the TWI Directory listings for materials listed under the heading “publicly available program materials”
