New York City Guiding Principles Project
About the Project
CAL is working with school-based teams of teachers and administrators in New York City to use the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education to reflect on current practices and to improve in targeted areas. Nine schools participated in the project in 2006, and ten more are expected to participate in 2007.
The project involves a series of four workshops:
- The first introduces participants to the seven strands of the Guiding Principles document
- Assessment and Accountability
- Curriculum
- Instruction
- Staff Quality and Professional Development
- Program Structure
- Family and Community
- Support and Resources
- In workshop 2 we discuss how school teams can rate their program using the Guiding Principles rubric and provide evidence for their ratings
- Workshop 3 focuses on developing action plans for improvement
- In the last workshop, schools share their action plans with each other and discuss ways to facilitate working on those action plans individually and collaboratively
Participating schools in 2006 developed action plans in assessment, curriculum, instruction, program structure, and family and community.
