CONFERENCES

Wednesday, July 23, 2003, 3:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. (Grand Peninsula A). Julie Sugarman will present "Instructional Strategies for the Development of Bilingualism and Biliteracy." Based on a qualitative study of four successful two-way programs, this presentation will discuss language/content integration, student grouping, and balanced and flexible literacy instruction to promote bilingualism and biliteracy.

Thursday, July 24, 2003, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Regency B). Donna Christian & Julie Sugarman (CAL), Kathryn Lindholm-Leary (San Jose State University), and David Rogers (Dual Language Education of New Mexico) will facilitate "Program Standards for Dual Language Education: Feedback Requested!" In this session, we will present draft program standards for dual language education that are being reviewed by a panel organized by NCELA and CAL. Feedback from participants will contribute to revisions of the draft.

A new Training of Trainers for the Dual-U Curriculum is being offered on August 13, 14 & 15 at the Illinois Resource Center in the Chicago area. Else Hamayan, Liz Howard and Nancy Commins will be participating in this three day event. For registration information please go to http://www.thecenterweb.org/irc or http://www.dualu.org/.

Dual-U (http://www.dualu.org/) an eight-module, on-line professional development curriculum, based on Dual Language Instruction: A Handbook for Enriched Education by N. Cloud, F. Genesee and E. Hamayan (Heinle & Heinle, 2000) was launched on April 1, 2003. This curriculum is designed to assist elementary and secondary teachers and administrators in developing, implementing, and assessing dual language or two-way immersion programs.

GWATFL (The Greater Washington Association of Teachers of Foreign Languages) and NCLRC (National Capital Language Resource Center: CAL, George Washington University, Georgetown University) are sponsoring an Immersion Symposium on September 19-20 at Georgetown University.

More information on the symposium can be found at http://www.pgcps.org/~forlang/symposium.htm. The call for papers is also linked from that site, and proposals are due by July 21, 2003 (contact Dr. Pat Barr-Harrison at pbarr@pgcps.org for more information).

Both the Frequently Asked Questions Page (http://cal-org.wdi.net/twi/faq.htm) and the Bibliography Page (http://cal-org.wdi.net/twi/bib.htm) have been updated with the latest resources on Two-Way Immersion. As always, let me know (julie@cal.org) if you know of resources we've missed!

The questionnaire for the Directory of Two-Way Immersion Programs in the United States is now available in an easy-to-use online version. This will not only facilitate filling out the form on your end, but will greatly simplify and speed up the process by which we can get your program listed. You can access the questionnaire at http://cal-org.wdi.net/twi/directory/portal.html. At this point, continue to e-mail changes to already listed programs directly to julie@cal.org.

This is the fifteenth in a series of occasional post-only mailings from the Center for Applied Linguistics. These messages include information about current two-way immersion news, publications, and events. If you received this bulletin in error and/or you would like to be removed from the CAL Two-Way Immersion e-mail mailing list, please send an email to julie@cal.org.
