TWI Bulletin #33: Upcoming conferences and institutes (6/3/2008)

There are lots of conferences and institutes coming up for dual language/two-way immersion practitioners. Some are approaching very quickly, but there still is space available!

 

CARLA Summer Institutes

University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota has sponsored an internationally known summer institute program for second language teachers since 1996. These interactive workshops include discussion, theory-building, hands-on activities, and networking, and link research and theory with practical applications for the classroom.

Among the institutes offered this year is one which will be presented by Lynn Thompson of the Center for Applied Linguistics along with CARLA’s Tara Fortune:

Meeting the Challenges of Immersion Education: "How well do students speak the immersion language?" (July 14-18, 2008)

NABE Dual Immersion SIG Pre-Conference Institute

Deadline for submission of paper proposals: September 1, 2008

The NABE Dual Immersion SIG (Special Interest Group) is once again holding a one-day pre-conference institute on dual language/two-way immersion on the day before the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) annual conference in February, 2009. The call for papers is now open. Each presentation will be one hour and should speak to dual language or two-way immersion education. Proposals are due September 1, 2008. Please e-mail DualLanguage09@yahoo.com for the Call for Proposals form.

Immersion Education: Pathways to Bilingualism & Beyond

October 16–18, 2008

Language immersion education has emerged as a uniquely constituted, highly effective program model for launching students on the road to bilingualism, multilingualism and intercultural competence. School-based immersion programs follow a variety of paths, including one-way foreign language immersion, two-way bilingual immersion, and indigenous immersion for language and culture revitalization. While each pathway targets distinct socio-cultural contexts and educational needs, all are grounded in a set of core characteristics with a strong focus on subject matter learning as well as language development.

Under the leadership of two national centers in the U.S., CARLA (Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, University of Minnesota) and CAL (Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, D.C.), this third international conference on immersion education brings these pathways together to engage in meaningful dialogue and professional exchange across languages, levels, learner audiences, program models and sociopolitical contexts.

13th Annual La Cosecha Dual Language Conference

November 12-15, 2008

Registration is now open for the 13th Annual Dual Language Conference which will be held November 12-15, 2008 at the Santa Fe Convention Center. The conference brings together educators, parents, researchers and the community that support dual language enrichment education. Come share your experience and knowledge, and “harvest” (network) the best of our multilingual/multicultural communities.
