Join the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) at this summer institute designed for educators who provide instruction in Spanish. Featured presenters Dr. Margarita Calderón, Dr. María N. Trejo, and Ms. Guadalupe Espino will share research-based strategies and practical tools for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish and addressing Common Core State Standards through Spanish instruction. CAL presenters Drs. Julie Sugarman and Beatriz Arias will provide guidance on developing effective bilingual programs.

Summer Institutes
CARLA's Summer Institutes for Immersion Teachers
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) will hold the 2012 Summer Institutes for Immersion Education in June and July. The institutes are uniquely designed for one-way (world language) and two-way immersion educators who teach subject matter through the target language for 50-100% of the school day and promote continued development of English. Institute topics include immersion teaching for character-based languages and counterbalanced instruction in the immersion classroom.

Upcoming Conferences
MABE Dual Language Conference
The Massachusetts Association for Bilingual Education (MABE) is sponsoring the first ever Conference for Dual Language Programs of Southern New England, Making Connections: Celebrating Dual Language Education.
The conference will be held Saturday, May 19 in Pawtucket, RI, and will serve as an opportunity for school and district leaders, classroom teachers, and staff working in dual language programs to network, engage in professional development, and learn to develop and advocate for dual language programs. The conference will feature current researchers in the field of dual language education, including former CAL researcher and bilingual education specialist, Liz Howard.

Two-Way CABE
Two-Way CABE's 20th annual conference will be held June 27-30 in Newport Beach, CA. At the conference, CAL's Dr. Julie Sugarman will talk about CAL's bilingual education resources and will give two presentations:
- Two-Way Program Models: Greater Than the Sum of Their Parts; and
- Fostering Linguistic and Cultrural Equity in Two-Way Immersion Programs with Luis Versalles (Pacific Education Group).
