SUMMARY
The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) seeks an experienced, collaborative, forward-thinking professional to provide leadership as Vice President (VP)/Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting to the President and CEO, the VP/CFO will collaborate with the Senior Director of Finance on principal finance functions and responsibilities and will be primarily responsible for developing efficient and effective operations to support CAL’s mission, program initiatives and business development activities.

The VP/CFO will work closely with the President to align CAL program, operations and business development goals with CAL’s mission, promoting CAL’s principles grounded in access, equity, and mutual understanding for culturally and linguistically diverse populations within the U. S. and globally. The VP/CFO will represent the President in his absence and will primarily be responsible for providing day-to-day oversight to CAL operations and business activities. The VP/CFO will work closely with CAL senior staff to create synergy among the different program, financial, administrative, and operation activities and to assure that CAL services are fully supported and meet the highest standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Coordinate finance, administrative and programmatic approaches, procedures and policies that are mission related and result in efficient and effective operations.
  • Provide leadership in connecting critical issues in language policy, research, practice, assessment, technical assistance and professional development to CAL’s mission, initiatives and activities.
  • Provide support for maintaining and enhancing existing business activities.
  • Coordinate activities for identifying, developing, and supporting new revenue streams related to CAL’s mission and aligned with CAL’s overall strategic goals.
  • Coordinate activities for building relationships with varied funding sources.
  • Provide oversight to HR functions to assure clear, effective and efficient HR services for CAL staff.
  • Coordinate activities to promote and support a safe, respectful and positive environment for staff.
  • Meet with senior staff on a regular and scheduled basis to review and discuss the status of program activities, year-to date budget, and programmatic milestones.
  • Coordinate activities for conducting annual performance reviews including professional goals and metrics.   
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing CAL’s strategic plan.
  • Represent CAL in external professional meetings.
  • Coordinate activities for producing CAL’s annual report, board reports, and financial reports.
  • Engage with senior staff in promoting professional growth opportunities for CAL staff.
  • Coordinate facility and I/T services that contribute to an efficient, safe, and positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise senior administrative, operations and program staff.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 Ideal candidate will have strong non-profit/for-profit experience in business and administration within the context of culturally and linguistically diverse education (CLAD); English learner education, world languages, TESOL, bilingual education or a related area.

  • Master’s degree (MA, MS, or MBA) from an accredited college or university, in a relevant field with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience required; or
  • Doctorate degree (PhD or EdD) from an accredited college or university, in a relevant field with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Extensive experience with for profit and non-profit operations in a language and education context.
  • Experience with budget management, financial forecasting and reporting.
  • Experience with systems/platform integration and online learning solutions. 

 Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability coordinating financial, operational, and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with uniform accounting administrative requirements, cost principles, and audit requirements for federal awards.
  • Designation as Certified Association Executive (CAE).
  • Demonstrated ability working with diverse staff within an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Proven record of leading, mentoring and supervising senior staff.
  • Track record of creating and maintaining a multi-year strategic plan.
  • Proven ability to prioritize initiatives based on data-driven analysis.
  • Outstanding ability in building and maintaining strategic partnership relationships.
  • Appreciation and sensitivity toward multilingualism and multiculturalism.
  • Knowledge of language and education policies and practices.
  • Ability to communicate in English and in one or more additional languages.
  • Demonstrated public presentation and speaking ability.
  • Strong emotional intelligence - active listening skills and empathy; honest; ethical; transparent; and intercultural and intergenerational communicator.

Remote Work and Relocation

This position requires on-site work at the CAL office in Washington, DC. Occasional travel, if required, and limited remote work. There is no relocation assistance for this position.

 Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment. CAL adheres to ADA compliance and guidelines as a common practice.
