As CAL’s Vice President of Communications, Susan Gilson is responsible for the development and implementation of the communications activities for the organization and serves as a member of the executive management team. Gilson oversees CAL’s online communications channels, media relations, marketing, brand management, collateral material development, special events and conference exhibits, publications, and supports business development and partnership activities.
Gilson has over 35 years of experience in designing and executing successful communication campaigns. Before joining CAL in 2003, Gilson served as an independent marketing consultant, most notably working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Public and Indian Housing, to revamp their website. For over five years, Gilson worked for Convergence Group International as a management and marketing consultant, also serving as operations manager for the company for three years. Clients served include Royal Bank of Canada, Security First Network Bank, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Novartis Pharmaceutical Companies, and AXA SunLife Direct in Bristol, England. Gilson specialized in creating successful communications strategies, developing and implementing effective operational plans, and executing innovative marketing campaigns designed to help organizations reach their goals.
Gilson worked for over 13 years in the financial services industry, serving as the advertising director for a $6 billion banking corporation in Indiana. She directed all marketing and advertising activities for seventeen affiliate banks and all bank divisions, developing marketing and sales strategies, writing effective communications copy, and managing all communications delivery channels. She served as the communications director for the merger of seventeen banks after an acquisition, managing every aspect of the planning and communication with a customer base of over 2,000,000 clients, completing over 5,000 discrete communication activities to ensure that meaningful client communications were combined with legal and compliance requirements for customer notification. She also served for three years on the national marketing committee for the CIRRUS automated teller machine (ATM) network, which set the strategic marketing direction for the association and developed nationwide marketing campaigns designed to increase ATM usage by customers.
Gilson worked for 7 years as Associate to the Publisher for a small publishing company in Indiana, providing marketing and copy for three regional tabloid newspapers, the publication of historical books and atlases, and Indianapolis Monthly, a four-color magazine.
Gilson holds a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, majoring in World and American History with a minor in Political Science. She graduated with distinction from the School of Bank Marketing in Boulder, Colorado. She is a member of the American Marketing Association, and served for over seven years as Vice President of the Indiana Chapter of Bank Marketing. She volunteers with Autism Speaks, a leading organization dedicated to research and advocacy around issues on the autism spectrum.
