CAL's Test Development team’s work encompasses all phases of development of preK-12 ELL assessments, from needs analysis and test design to refreshing and refining established operational testing programs. Our language testing specialists bring expertise in applied linguistics, test development, and ESL, bilingual, and general education instruction for Kindergarten through adult learners.
We work in close collaboration with the Test Production, Psychometrics, Research, Test Administration, and Test Program Management teams. This interdependent approach ensures that the technical foundations and final products are high quality, and we implement comprehensive quality control procedures every step of the way.
In addition to conducting needs analysis, framework development, and test design, the team is skilled in creating item specifications that operationalize standards, training and guiding item writers, and reviewing and refining test items through a rigorous process. Once operational, testing programs are maintained and refreshed by our team, and we work to refine operational testing programs over time through designated refreshment cycles.
We are energized by the ways that technology allows for more direct, engaging, and innovative assessment of students’ language proficiency, and we look forward to continuing to explore this avenue for testing.
