ConclusionWriters have to assume that their readers are knowledgeable, but what individual readers know depends on what they have learned through experience and reading. The background knowledge of English language learners may well be different from that of native English speakers for cultural reasons. Teachers can't anticipate every difficulty that students might have in drawing inferences as they read or provide every bit of background knowledge that students need. But they can help children over the hurdles that assigned texts present and help them build the rich knowledge bases they need for reading. next |
