Promoting education and achievement of adults learning English

Adult ESL Resource Database Background

Since October 2004 (under funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Continuing Education [OVAE]), adult ESL specialists and researchers at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) have been developing and populating a database of evidence-based documents. The Adult ESL Resource provides bibliographic references (with links to the full text whenever possible) to documents useful to adult ESL practitioners. The documents describe research related to the field of adult ESL instruction, provide guides to current practice, and may point the way to further research. When there is an external online review of the document, we link to the review.

The documents were selected for inclusion based on a set of criteria developed by CAL staff. The U.S. Department of Education and CAL make no claims regarding the quality of these documents. The majority of the documents in the database are recent, published since the year 2000; however, there are a few important works and statistical compilations from the late 1990s.
