Description: Using technology with English learners is our new reality. Although unequal access to technology in schools is improving, teachers need to rethink traditional approaches how to design meaningful authentic, and transformative learning with technology (Armstrong & Earle, 2012; Archambault, Wetzel, Foulger, & Williams, 2010). With the vast array of digital choices, the Educator Toolkit on Educational Technology for English Learners (U.S. Department of Education, 2018) provides guidance to determine which digital tools and applications to use to meet the learning challenges for English learners. In this interactive workshop, participants are encouraged to bring their own device such as an iPad, smart phone, or laptop, to explore digital learning tools such as Symboloo™, Dotstorming,™ ThingLink™, and Listthings™ to reflect on how multilingual learners generate ideas using their entire linguistic repertoire to create innovative artifacts or solve authentic problems.
Using the Digital Learning Resources Matrix (U.S. Department of Education, 2018) as a common reference for discussing technology resources, participants will explore educational technology tools that will help English learners to gain English proficiency, learn grade-level academic content, and collaborate with peers on academic tasks. Participants will be guided in using a hyperlinked infographic highlighting possible choices in the categories of digital academic content tools, digital productivity tools, and digital communication tools to improve, practice, and demonstrate learning. By the end of this workshop, participants will identify visual, auditory, translation, and collaboration support features of several digital learning tools used in this session as well as discuss how students can leverage technology to take an active role in achieving and demonstrating competency in their language and learning goals using all four language domains.
