PreK-8 World Language Assessment Development Funded by Department of Education Grant

CAL is excited to announce new funding from a U.S. Department of Education Title VI International Research and Studies (IRS)grant to create a flexible computer-based training program for CAL’s world language assessment tools for PreK-8 learners: the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and the Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA).

This three-year project will result in downloadable self-access materials that train users to administer and rate these speaking assessments for young language learners. Utilizing stakeholder focus groups, recording of test administrations, and piloting by educators, the project will develop training materials in English adaptable to any target language with guidance for both world language and dual language contexts. It will also include language-specific resources in Spanish and Mandarin.

The final SOPA/ELLOPA training program will include 1) digital, self-access modules with narrated presentations, sample assessment videos, and quizzes, 2) a library of scoring practice videos, 3) a companion training workbook, 4) updated administrator manual, and 5) Assessment Use Argument.
