New SIOP Lesson Plans Posted for Educators
Strategic planning and delivery of every lesson to meet the needs of ELLs lie at the core of the SIOP Model. More specifically, combining content and language objectives and including them into a meaningful instructional sequence that addresses all SIOP components play a crucial role in the success of SIOP implementation. To provide you with more examples of how that can be done, we added two new lesson plans to our resources. We’ve made two new lesson plans available on our Web site:
• 5th Grade Math – Practical Applications of Fractions, Percents, and Decimals
• 8th Grade Language Arts – Analyzing TV Commercials

Integrated Content and Language Instruction
Integrating content and language instruction is key for successful implementation of the SIOP model. To learn more about this topic, check out the recent CAL digest by CAL SIOP facilitator Ari Sherris. The digest provides a theoretical basis for integrating content and language instruction, and offers tips on how to plan clear content and language outcomes for a lesson, provide effective interaction opportunities, promote all four language skills, and effectively review and assess students’ progress.

Using the SIOP Model to Improve Instruction
CREATE (The Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners) recently published a brief highlighting the use of SIOP features in science class. The brief provides information about how teachers can develop content and language objectives, emphasize key vocabulary, promote interaction, and incorporate effective review and assessment techniques. Using specific examples from a middle school science lesson, the authors offer practical suggestions for implementing the SIOP Model and improving English language learner achievement across content areas.
