Professional Development Services

The CAL SIOP team collaborates with schools, states, and districts to design and conduct SIOP Model professional development programs to meet their particular needs. Based on requests by districts and schools, CAL has developed SIOP workshops designed for specific grade level and/or content areas with a recent focus on delivering professional development services to PK-5 teachers.

We can also complement SIOP teacher workshops with coaching and lesson study services to assist teachers as they learn to incorporate the features of the SIOP Model into their lesson design and delivery.

Lesson Plans and Activities

Dragonfly Lesson
Check out the latest SIOP Model lesson plan that was added to our collection. This first grade literacy lesson on dragonflies addresses the Common Core State Standards: Reading for Grade 1 and can be implemented in a classroom with a variety of language proficiency levels (beginning through advanced). It also demonstrates how the Four Corner Graphic organizer (a technique recently demonstrated in CAL SIOP Model workshops), can be incorporated into elementary reading classrooms. View and download the lesson.

Predict-O-Gram Activity
A new elementary-level Predict-O-Gram activity based on the story Peppe the Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone is now available and can be used in contexts of Social Studies or Language Arts. The introductory page provides an overview of language and content objectives that support this learner activity, instructions for use, and benefits this activity provides for English learners. A "Story Map" Predict-O-Gram sample follows and includes two versions that address high and low levels of scaffolding. This Predict-O-Gram showcases how multiple SIOP Model features can be incorporated into a single learner activity.
