Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) – Evaluation of Study Abroad Programs

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is the oldest and largest nonprofit, nongovernmental study-abroad and intercultural-exchange organization in the United States. Since 1947, CIEE has helped thousands of people gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live and work in a globally interdependent and culturally-diverse world by offering comprehensive, relevant, and valuable exchange programs. Today, CIEE serves more than 340 United States colleges and universities, 1,000 high schools, and 35,000 international-exchange students each year.

CIEE’s Global Navigator high school study abroad programs provide students with short- or longer-term opportunities to experience new cultures. CAL researchers collaborated with CIEE to conduct analysis on language-proficiency-assessment results of CIEE study-abroad learners participating in an intensive four-week summer language program. For this project, CAL analyzed data and provided evaluation reports on language proficiency outcomes and student language gains for 2016, 2017 and 2018. Students participated in programs in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. This analysis is intended to highlight language-learning outcomes relative to programmatic, linguistic, and individual factors.
