ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics

For nearly 30 years, CAL housed the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics (ERIC/CLL). During that time, ERIC was a nationwide information network aiming to improve educational practice by providing ready access to education literature. ERIC maintained the world’s largest database of education-related materials, operated extensive question-answering services covering all subject areas and levels of education, and produced and distributed a wide range of publications designed to provide easy access to important information on topics in education. ERIC clearinghouses collected, produced, and disseminated education information in various subject areas.

ERIC/CLL subject areas included foreign language education, the teaching and learning of English as a second language, bilingual education, and all areas of linguistics. ERIC/CLL was operated by the Center for Applied Linguistics from 1974 through 2003 through contracts from the National Institute of Education, then from the U.S. Department of Education. ERIC/CLL produced many quality publications, including digests, online resource guides, print and Web-based newsletters, and books in the Language in Education and Professional Practice series. ERIC/CLL also maintained a website and provided question-answering services. Funding for ERIC/CLL ended December 31, 2003.

Resources Developed by ERIC/CLL

The following is an overview of the types of resources developed by CAL for ERIC/CLL. CAL is evaluating these resources to determine which are still relevant and useful to move to our revamped website.

Digests

Digests were short reports that synthesized current research, reviewed the literature, described teaching methods and program models, and offered practical ideas for teachers and others.

The Professional Practice Series
This series of publications was designed to provide language educators with accessible information, supported by theory and research, to help them improve or enhance their teaching and their programs.

ERIC/CLL News Bulletin

The ERIC/CLL News Bulletin was published semiannually from 1977 to 2003. This newsletter is in the public domain and may be freely reproduced and disseminated without permission.

Language Link

Language Link was published quarterly from June 1999 to December 2003. Each issue covered topics of interest to the foreign language, English as a second language, linguistics, and cross cultural education fields.

Resource Guides Online

Resource Guides Online (RGO) provided links to relevant resources on various topics in second language teaching and learning. ERIC/CLL developed several RGOs over the years on topics ranging from language policy and planning to computer-assisted language learning.

Many resources from the former ERIC Clearinghouses can be found at the ERIC website.
