About this CAL Publication

Teachers and administrators at all levels of education need ready access to
clear and reliable information about effective educational practices. CAL’s
Professional Practice Series is designed to provide practitioners with current
information on topics, trends, and techniques in language education. Each
volume addresses a particular topic of interest to foreign language educators
or to those who work with students learning English as a second language.

The initial chapters of each volume provide an overview of the topic,
describing its scope and importance, summarizing what is known from
research and practice, and identifying challenges and questions that remain
to be addressed. The following chapters describe specific programs or
instructional approaches that have been shown to be effective. The concluding
chapters summarize key points in the book, provide recommendations
for educators who wish to implement similar approaches, and offer
suggestions for future discussion and research.
Through the Professional Practice Series, CAL strives to provide language
educators with accessible and timely information, supported by theory and
research, that will help them enhance and enrich their teaching and their
programs.
